The Nordic defence ministers will meet today and tomorrow in Helsinki with Finland acting as chair nation for defence cooperation in 2013.

The ministers will discuss, among other things, exercises, crisis management and the future of Nordic defence cooperation in the two-day meeting, said a press release of the Ministry of Defence on Monday. They will also address growing materiel-related cooperation.

Hosted by Defence Minister Carl Haglund, the last Nordic defence ministers’ meeting during Finland's chairmanship will be held at the House of the Estates in Helsinki.

A total of 12 countries will participate in the meeting. Representatives have also been invited from the European Defence Agency (EDA) and NATO's Allied Command Transformation (ACT), according to the release.

The previous ministerial meeting was held in March in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland.

In addition to the Nordic defence ministers’ meeting, the House of the Estates provides the meeting venue also for the defence ministers of the Baltic States and the Nordic Group.

The Northern Group consists of the Nordic countries and Baltic States, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Poland and Germany.

The meetings of the Nordic countries and the Baltic States as well as of the Northern Group will deal with the development of defence cooperation both on regional and European levels.

The multinational capability cooperation will also be discussed in the Northern Group meeting.
