Noted non-fiction writer and former journalism professor Esko Salminen died at the age of 76 at his Espoo residence on Wednesday.

He was suffering from various old age complications.

Salminen was a staunch supporter of the Western ideal of freedom of speech. His works tackled subjects such as “Finlandisation,” self-censorship of the press, and freedom of speech.

His 2004 publication on communication revolution that examined the impact of radical leftism’s influence on the education of journalism ignited public debate and was nominated for the Tieto-Finlandia award.

His last work was published in 2011. It was about the emergence of the latest wave of Finlandisation.
