A fire alarm prompted the evacuation of several hundred people from the Jumbo Shopping Centre in Vantaa on Monday, although there was no fire threat at the market, Fire Service and Rescue department sources said.
The incident took place when the alarm was either pressed mistakenly or intentionally, as no fire threat was detected, sources said.
The Central Uusimaa fire and rescue department said normalcy restored in the market within 10 minutes.
“Someone pressed the fire alarm button, which created panic among the people," said on-duty rescue officer Tommi Leppioja, adding that there was no real danger.
Shopping centre authority said that there were 7,000 to 8,000 people in the building at the time of alarm.
"A few hundred people managed to get out,” said Esa Mattila, manager of the shopping centre, who termed the incident as frustrating but harmless.
