Four people suffered from smoke inhalation when a fire broke out in an apartment building at Yliopistonkatu in Tampere late Monday night.

Fire-fighters and rescue department sources said about 20 people were evacuated from the building after the fire engulfed the building and gutted an apartment completely.

The four people were attended to by the emergency services and given first aid.

Sources said the fire broke out on the first floor of the building at about 7pm and destroyed an apartment, while smoke and combustion gas also spread to the staircase of the building that houses other apartments.

Responding to the alarm, fire-fighters rushed to the spot and extinguished it after about one hour but the surveillance continued for some hours.

The tenants were expected to stay away from their homes at least until Tuesday morning as the emergency and rescue services were still assessing the situation.

Traffic movement on the adjacent roads was also snapped during the drive of the fire services and rescue teams.

According to Pekka Mutikainen from the rescue department, the fire originated on the first floor of the building.

Although the spreading to the nearby apartments could be controlled, there was a lot of smoke in the staircase.

The cause of the fire could not be known immediately.
