President Sauli Niinistö in his New Year’s speech emphasised to the needs for ensuring honesty, integrated values of peace, democracy and general wellbeing in the European Union.
 
Niinistö also expressed optimism that Finland should play the role of vanguard in shaping and safeguarding the EU in future.
 
He reminded the nation of the integral values of peace, democracy and general wellbeing as original purposes of the union urging the Finns to be bold during the transition.
“There is creation of the new; but also the dismantling of the old,” said the president.
 
The president reminded that transformation in technology and redistribution of wealth around the world has brought about many changes making many professions redundant as manifested in negotiations and layoffs.
 
The president still looked at the positives in that respect saying that those changes have at the same time brought about new occupations and opportunities.
 
He also mentioned Finland's place and strength in the changing world noting that the nation's sound democracy and well-trained people uphold rule of law and equality as part of a durable society.
 
Teija Tiilikainen, director of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, said the president in his speech expressed his own views and also issues that the public have strong opinions about.
