A Finnish convoy came under attack  in northern Afghanistan near Mazar-i-Sharif on Tuesday morning local time, convoy sources said.

An Afghan soldier, who was part of the convoy and sustained critical wounds in the attack, succumbed to his injuries, although the Finnish soldiers remained unhurt.

The attack took place when the Finnish soldiers had been training with the local soldiers in northern Afghanistan near Mazar-i-Sharif. Suddenly, the convoy was attacked with hand guns and rocket propelled grenades.

Major Mika Ala-Ojala told STT over phone that he felt the attack had been directed towards the local officials.

Ala-Ojala could not estimate the number of attackers and the incident was being investigated by the local authorities.

In the past  two Finnish soldiers were killed and two others seriously injured in an ISAF operation in Afghanistan.
