Future appointments of the local police chiefs will be made by the Ministry of Interior, according to a new government regulation.

The new regulation, however, will see the ministry consulting the police prior to making an appointment.

Currently, the appointments are made by the National Police Board. On Thursday, the proposal was handed over to the government for consideration by the parliamentary administrative committee.

The committee is to consider the justifications for the vetting of future appointments of the police chiefs by the interior ministry.

The number of police units are to be reduced at the beginning of this year as part of reforms.
