Two people were killed in separate incidents of fire at Rautjärvi in South Karelia and at Vöyri in  Ostrobothnia on Friday, fire-fighters and police said.

One person was killed when an old commercial building was engulfed in fire at Rautjärvi in South Karelia on Friday.

The building, located in Lehmuskatu in the centre of Simpele, was completely gutted by the fire.

According to the police, the first floor of the two-storey building had two flats.

The Etelä-Saimaa newspaper reported that the building was an old wooden structure, which hosted a flea store on the ground floor.

In another incident, a person who lived alone died in a fire at a residential house in Vöyri, Ostrobothnia.

Neighbours alarmed the authorities at around 7am at Kimontie, while fire and rescue services battled the blaze for one hour on Friday morning.

The small residential house was completely destroyed in fire.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, while the police are carrying out investigations.

Elsewhere in Kruunupyy in Ostrobothnia, a fire broke out on Friday, but was contained before spreading or causing much damage.

The fire, which originated from an extension to a roof of a nursery school located in Kurkipuronraitti, threatened to spread to the nearby building, but the rescue services got control of the situation in time.

According to the rescue services, the fire was caused by electrical equipment in the under-construction extension.

The fire however did not spread to the nursery school and the school will continue its operations as normal.

There was no people inside the building during the fire.
