An elderly man was killed in fire at Alajärvi area in South Ostrobothnia on Saturday.

According to the rescue services, the victim's 100-square meter house was destroyed in the fire. Sources said that the man lived alone in the house.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained as investigation is still on.

Meanwhile, around 30 people were evacuated from a high-rise apartment in Kaukajärvi, Tampere as a result of fire scare on Saturday.

The fire and rescue services responded to the fire alarm at around 4:30 pm. According to the police the fire may have been caused intentionally but investigations are still ongoing.

There was a blazing sofa or huge arm chair at the staircase hall in the ground floor of the building, according to rescue service source at the scene.

Sources said the occupants of the building had to be evacuated as the fire caused blackout in some apartments and around the staircase hall.

"The electricity metre was damaged so badly that it would very difficult to mend during the weekend," said Matti Saarinen, the chief fire fighter on duty.

Saarinen reckons that the tenants will be able to return to their respective apartments early next week.

The residents, however, have been allowed to take some of their belongings they need from their apartments.

Arrangements have been made to have a nearby school as a temporary resident while some will look for a place for themselves.

Earlier on Friday, two people were killed in separate incidents of fire at Rautjärvi in South Karelia and at Vöyri in Ostrobothnia.
