FTimes-STT Report, February 10

The official number of transgenders in the country is growing, according to a report published in Savon Sanomat, a Finnish language newspaper.

Sex reassignment research has also increased in the last couple of years, with nearly 300 referrals made in last year alone, according to preliminary data.

The report also stated that the number of girls pondering their gender had also increased.

Maarit Huuska, a senior social worker from Transtutkipiste, a support center that offers services to all trans and intersex persons, told the newspaper that the youngest persons to have contacted them were of 13 years of age.

Huuska added that awareness on the condition has increased and people have become more open, but dispelled the notion that the number of transgenders has increased.

Transgender therapy and research is carried out in Helsinki and Tampere. About three out of four surveyed have been diagnosed as transgenders.
