The ongoing investigations related to the detained former chief of Helsinki drug unit police, Jari Aarnio, has put a negative impact on the activities of the unit, admitted Petri Rainiala, a detective from the Helsinki police department.

Jari Aarnio has been in custody since his arrest in November 2013 on various charges including bribery, money laundering and abusing official position.

According to Rainiala, the staff were currently working under too much pressure and trying to do their best.

The detective said it was embarrassing when people asked and criticised officers and how things were done at the workplace while they knew nothing.

He stressed that the unit was legally constituted and if there was anything against the law, it should be investigated.

Despite all the difficulties, Helsinki police continues to carry out more investigations, he said, adding that although the drug situation has worsened recently, the police were still working very hard.

He emphasised that the National Bureau of Investigation and the police drug unit continued to cooperate closely, despite some news outlets and other informal channel of discussion speculating otherwise.
