A devastating fire at the Kouvola combined school on Tuesday forced closure for an indefinite period.

According to witness, the fire started from the school gymnasium at midday causing huge smoke and engulfing the entire school building.

Fire-fighters were trying to extinguish the fire till Tuesday night and expected that the fire would be doused completely by Wednesday morning.

The school authority decided to shift the centres of the matriculation examinations scheduled for Wednesday to nearby school.

Johanna Kuisma-Taskinen, music teacher at the school, said the students and the staff immediately got off the building abiding by the exit guidelines after noticing the smoke.

No human casualty was reported in the incident.

The music teacher said some of the students had to rush out without being properly covered with protective covering.

The evacuated students were then transferred to the Kankaan koulu, a nearby primary school.

The school building is badly damaged and it is not yet known when the students will be allowed to return.

A briefing session for both the students and the teachers is scheduled at Kouvola talo for Wednesday.

The school, combined with the upper secondary school, has around 600 students.
