The premier will invite the leaders of the opposition political parties at the end of February for a debate.
“I will invite the leaders of both opposition parties to a discussion with the Government party leaders at the end of February,” said the prime minister.
He said the aim was to gauge the opposition leaders’ opinions on the phasing of the adjustment, according to a government press release.
It would be very valuable if they could reach a consensus on a reasonable timetable for bringing the government’s debt-to-GDP ratio down and implement the adjustment measures, Katainen added.
Katainen believed that every serious political party was expected to share their views on the issue but stressed that such discussion could only be held in good faith.
“No one can be forced. If Timo Soini is of the opinion that they do not want to discuss or commit to on the deliberations pertaining austerity measures talks, then no one can,” said the premier.
At this juncture, Katainen did not reveal how the government intended to execute the advice of the fiscal policy expert group after it delivered its assessment on Thursday.
The government would decide in the adjustment measures when it would discuss limiting spending in March.
