FTimes-STT Report, February 15

The Helsinki police on Friday suspended two, out of three police personnel who were arrested earlier in connection with the case of Aarnio, the detained former chief of the Helsinki drug unit police.

The other suspected policeman, however, was not suspended, said police sources.

According to the police department, his arrest at the moment had not provided enough justification for his suspension.

The suspicions surrounding the policemen include the secret use of coercive means.

All the officers have denied the charges.

Earlier, three policemen were arrested on February 5 in connection with the investigations surrounding Jari Aarnio, the former chief of Helsinki police drug unit.

But two personnel were released a day later. One officer remained behind bars as the prosecution sought a court order to extend his detention.

Aarnio – who is currently detained – faces numerous charges including narcotic-related crimes and accepting of bribes.

Previously, investigations led to the arrests of police officers who at one point served under Aarnio. The previously arrested policemen had been accused of breach of duty.
