The leader of an international evaluation team, Mike Weightman, is now visiting Finland to evaluate the Finnish research programme on the safety of nuclear installations (SAFIR2014), said a

press release of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy.

University of Cambridge’s visiting professor Mike Weightman, who leads the British evaluation team, was the Chief Inspector (CEO) of Nuclear Installations of The Office for Nuclear

Regulation in the UK till 2013.

Weightman encourages Finnish nuclear experts and researchers to increase still further their involvement in international research programmes and to host international conferences to

demonstrate the world leading nature of some Finnish nuclear research.

“I have found substantial evidence of high quality nuclear safety research and wise investment in maintenance and expansion of Finnish nuclear safety expertise and associated research

facilities,” said Weightman as his first impressions at a roundup meeting of the visit on 7 March 2014 at the Ministry of Employment and the Economy.

In line with the fundamental principle of nuclear safety - continuous improvement – he has offered suggestions for further enhancement of the programme to meet future challenges.

“The programme could be managed on a theme basis rather than a research area basis thereby creating more versatile multi-discipline expert teams,” Professor Weightman continued, “And

also having closer ties with other nuclear research programmes in Finland.”

The aim of the SAFIR2014 programme implemented in 2011-2014 is to develop and maintain the level of nuclear expertise in Finland and train new experts in the field, to carry out high-quality

research at the international level.
