The Chief of the Vihreä Liito (Green League), one of the components of the six-party alliance government, Ville Niinistö has said he believes that Russian Rosatom’s participation in the Fennovoima nuclear power plant project was largely geopolitical.

In an interview in the morning breakfast programme of Yle on Saturday, Niinistö, also the environment minister, pointed out that according to the law, property of strategic importance should not go to foreign ownership.

Niinistö claimed that Rosatom's finances remain a secret and the company has also been used widely in Russia's strategic geopolitical-related tasks.

Niinistö said Rosatom would have a lot of decision making power, because in addition to being a major financial contributor, it was also a supplier in the project.

Niinistö observed that the withdrawal of many Finnish companies from the nuclear power project showed that a nuclear power plant was not profitable.

The Green League is opposing the plans to reconsider permit for nuclear power plant by parliament, which they say is against the government programme.

The six-party alliance government is facing difficulties surrounding the permission given to the proposed Fennovoima nuclear power plant, with conflicting opinions coming from inside the government.

The crisis is likely to deepen as the Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance), another component of the government, opposed the move following the Vihreät (Green Party).
Vihreät has already hinted at quitting the government centring the issue.
