Defence Minister Carl Haglund on Monday said the recent incidents in Crimea showed that military actions still could not be ruled out in Europe.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the National Defence Course, the minister said the situation was still very difficult from the Finnish point of view, since one of the party involved in the crisis is Russia, a neighbouring country.

Haglund said Finland had made its position clear that Russia's action in the Crimean region of Ukraine was offensive towards Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and could not be justified for any reason.

The defence minister pointed out that Russia was an important partner and neighbour, but reiterated that good neighbours should be honest towards each other.

Haglund said a Russian military exercise activities nearby Finland should not draw too many concussions.

The minister assured that the security situation in the country was stable and the Russian military exercise was of no danger to the nation. Haglund, however, added that the situation was being followed closely.
