Wed, 26 Mar, 2014 12:00:34 AM FTimes-STT Report, March 26 File picture of bicycles. FTimes Photo. A record number of bicycles were stolen from different places of the country in 2013, according to the report of the Federation of Finnish Financial Services.
More than 16,000 bicycles, on an average about 40 bicycles a day, were stolen last year compared to 11,000 bicycles recorded stolen in 2012.
Aku Pänkäläinen from the Financial Services said that the rise in the number of bicycles stolen can partly be attributed to the Jopo bicycle.
Pänkäläinen explained that the specific brand of Jopo bicycles are most sought after and selling them afterwards is easy.
"When Jopo is stolen it is more likely to be sold the next day via the net in a different locality," said Pänkäläinen.

Earlier, in August 2013, police arrested three persons on charge of serial thefts of bicycles after 80 Jopo bicycles were stolen from different areas in Jyväskylä during the last summer.
The stolen bikes were sold on the internet at a rate ranging from EUR 60 to EUR 120, much lower than the original price, said the police at that time.
The police said most of the stolen bicycles were sold out fast because of the low price.
