Minister of Economic Affairs Jan Vapaavuori has announced his aspiration to become the next chairperson of the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party).

The message posted by Vapaavuori on Twitter is the first by a senior figure in the party that shows an intention to contest for the top post of the ruling party.

Vapaavuori describes the party in his website as a "monumental, wonderful and popular movement", saying he cannot fathom a finer task than to act as its chairperson.

The coalition party will elect its new chairman in June at a party convention in Lahti.

Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen on April 5 announced his decision to step down as the party chairman.

Vapaavuori is from Helsinki and has been a member of the parliament since 2003. He has previously served as the Minister of Housing and the Minister of Nordic Cooperation.

He rose to become the Minister of Economic Affairs in the Katainen government as well the chairman of the party's parliamentary group after Jyri Häkämies became the CEO of the Confederation of Finnish Industries.
