Helsinki City Council at a meeting took the decision of changing the name of the station on Tuesday, sources at the city corporation said.
The justification for changing the name of the metro station is based on the fact that University of Helsinki is an important establishment in the area.
In addition, the metro network will continue towards the direction of Espoo, hence in the future there will be a direct connection from the University of Helsinki station to Aalto University campus.
Espoo has decided to name the metro station Aalto University station.
Earlier, Helsinki City Council decided to rename Katajanokanpuisto as Tove Jansson Park.
