Opposition party Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) is set to table an interpellation in the parliament to address the deteriorating unemployment situation in the country.

This will be the 17th interpellation tabled during the tenure of the current government.

The opposition party wants to remind the government that the work is not yet done.

Kimmo Tiilikainen, chairperson of the party’s parliamentary group, at a press briefing on Thursday held the prime minister’s party, Kansallinen
Kokoomus (National Coalition Party), as ultimately responsible for what he termed a failed economic and employment policy.

Tiilikainen also berated Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party) for unfulfilled promises regarding creation of jobs. He reminded that before elections the social democrats had promised creation of 100,000 new jobs.

Tiilikainen pointed out that the government’s aim was to reduce unemployment by five per cent. The target, according to him, was agreed in discussions five years ago and afterwards the economic predictions have remained weaker.

A Statistics Finland report released on Thursday shows that the unemployment rate in March stood at 9.5 per cent with the number of unemployed standing at 252,000 or 16,000 more than that in March 2013.

The government could have done better, said Tiilikainen.

Juha Sipilä, chairman of the Centre Party, on his part said Finland could borrow a leaf from Sweden which recovered from the economic crisis significantly faster. On the contrary, Sipilä pointed out, Finland has not done the same in the last three years.

Another opposition party, Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party), is still considering whether to be involved in the interpellation or not.
