The number of foreign-language speakers exceeded that of Swedish speakers in March, according to Statistics Finland's preliminary data.

At the end of March, there were 293,540 foreign-language speakers in Finland, which is 5.4 per cent of the population. The number of people speaking Swedish as their native language was 290,760, the data says.

Finland's population at the end of March was 5,455,068, it adds.

Over the January to March period, Finland's population increased by 3,800 persons, which is 350 less than in the respective period of a year ago.

The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad. The number of immigrants was 2,880 higher than that of emigrants.

Some 6,270 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 3,390 persons emigrated from Finland, according to the preliminary statistics for January to March period.

The number of immigrants was 590 lower and the number of emigrants 300 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 1,520 of the immigrants and 2,250 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

Migration loss from migration between regions was largest in absolute numbers in the region of North Karelia, 160 persons, and in relative terms in Kainuu, 1.5 per million of the population, according to the statistics.
