Speaking at a dinner reception accorded to foreign diplomats in the City Hall of Helsinki, Niinistö expressed deep concern at the continued escalation of the Ukraine crisis.
He regretted that the established security mechanisms have not been able to prevent its emergence and escalation.
Earlier on April 27, Niinistö said if there is no sign of a resolution of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, the European Union should seriously consider new sanctions against Russia, according to a report of the national broadcasting corporation Yle.
“Now, of course, we all certainly hope that sanctions will not be required, but, of course, these will have to be discussed if there is no progress or if things take a turn for the worse,” he told Yle at the National Veterans’ Day programme in Mikkeli on Sunday.
