Henna Virkkunen, the Mininster of Transport and Local Government will not contest for the leadership of Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party).

The Minister revealed her decision on Wednesday in an interview with the women magazine Me Naiset.

Virkkunen said that she had set her mind to concentrate on the European parliament elections in which she is a candidate.

According to Virkkunen, running for two campaigns concurrently would not give the right feel to the voters.

Virkkunen pointed out in a Facebook message that it is a new herald for the party. The Minister also reminded that she has participated in the party work for the last 15 years and has acted in the capacity of party's deputy chair for the last six years.

As it stands, only Jan Vapaavuori, the Minister of Economic Affairs and Alexander Stubb, the minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade have announced their candidature to succeed Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen as the party head.

Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen on April 5 announced his decision to step down as the National Coalition Party chairman as well as the prime minister.

The party will elect its new chairperson in June at a convention in Lahti.
