Minister of Health and Social Services Paula Risikko has entered the race to become the next chairperson of the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party).

Risikko said she had received a huge number of requests to join the race as the leader of the party.

In a statement, Risikko said she wanted to renew the Finnish desire for each and every Finn to have the opportunity to build one’s own future with optimism and peace of mind.

The latest entry of Risikko in the race means there are now three candidates contesting for leadership post in the Kokoomus after the earlier announcements by European Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Alexander Stubb and Minister of Economic Affairs Jan Vapaavuori.

Risikko has served as a minister for seven years and has been a member of parliament for 11 years.

In her announcement Risikko banked on her unique experience as a nurse, a teacher and a leader. The minister on Thursday left for a trip to China to promote exports from Finnish health companies.

Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen on April 5 announced his decision to step down as the National Coalition Party chairman as well as the prime minister.

The party will elect its new chairperson in June at a convention in Lahti.
