A number of forest fires took place in different parts of the country on Saturday.

Tree leaves were burned in the town of Oulu around noon, from where the fire spread to a nearby meadow.

On Saturday afternoon, forest fires burned hectares of hay in Lohja and hectares of fields in Raisio. In Rauma burning twigs gave rise to a two-hectare field fire.

In another incident, a fire originating from matches being played with by a child in Liperi area spread to a nearby forest.

The North Karelia Rescue Department said a boy of eight lit a piece of paper with matches, from where the fire spread and burned around 20 square metres of forest area. The rescue department reminds that the ground is very dry.

Meanwhile, the Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued forest fire warnings in Satakunta, Päijät-Häme, Kymenlaakso, South Karelia, Pirkanmaa, Central Finland, South Savo, South Ostrobothnia, Ostrobothnia, and Central Ostrobothnia regions.

The risk of grass fires is high in North Ostrobothnia with the exception of Pudasjärvi, Taivalkoski and Kuusamo.

Earlier, on April 30, a forest fire broke out at Tattarisuo in northeast Helsinki during the traditional Vappu Day (May Day) celebrations causing a cloud of smoke in the Helsinki sky.

The smoke cloud, however, did not spread to areas that are largely inhabited and buildings are in no immediate danger, said the rescue department.
