The newly-elected Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party) Chairman Antti Rinne on Saturday expressed the hope that the outgoing party chief, Jutta Urpilainen would continue as a cabinet member, if party leaders and activists include her in the cabinet.

After her defeat in the race for the SDP chair on Friday, Urpilainen announced that she would give up her ministerial docket following the change in the party leadership.

Antti Rinne, while speaking at the party congress in Seinäjoki, said the government formation talks will be held next spring and expressed the hope that Urpilainen would remain in the cabinet.

The new SDP chairman also hopes the Social Democratic Party would be the “party of prime minister” next spring.

He stressed that party leaders and activists would leave the Seinäjoki congress with the aim to be unified and would use its political strength best.

Rinne said the government’s major economic policy decisions have already been carried out. “Now we have to focus on what can be done to boost growth and strengthen employment.”

Meanwhile, the outgoing chief of SDP, the second largest component of the five-party alliance government, Jutta Urpilainen, also the finance minister on Saturday said now she felt as if a burden of 50 kilograms had fallen from her shoulders.

Speaking at the Yle Ykkösaamu (Yle morning breakfast programme), she said the minute schedule would no longer belong in her life.

Urpilainen was present in the Yle programme together with the newly elected party chief Antti Rinne. Urpilainen said she has taken the loss easily.

“A leadership is that one moves from the ranks to front-line troops and, when the time comes, goes back again to the rows,” she remarked.
