Dozens of voting envelopes in the early voting of the European parliamentary polls were found incorrectly stamped in Espoo on Friday, according to an Yle report.

The report said a postal worker might have unknowingly stamped the envelopes instead of ballot papers.

Risto Pirkanniemi, secretary of the Central Election Commission of the City of Espoo deemed the occurrence incomprehensible.

Pirkanniemi said 69 election envelopes were found stamped at the Tapiola postal office.

An election envelope cannot be opened before the election day to verify if the ballots are stamped or not.

Arto Jääskeläinen, chief election office from the Justice Ministry pointed out that the stamped envelopes cannot be opened in Espoo and must be sent to the Uusimaa election commission. The Uusimaa election commission will decide the validity of the votes.

As per the law, unstamped ballot papers are considered spoiled.

Meanwhile, the voters’ turnout in this year’s European parliamentary election’s early voting is taking a shape similar to the previous one.

The voters’ turnout on late Friday evening stood at 316,000. The turnout at the corresponding stage five years ago was 330,000.

On Friday, 98,000 people cast votes and so far 7.5 per cent of the eligible voters have already turned out with women participating more actively than men.

Lapland and South Savonia electoral districts are so far the most active with a 9.2 per cent voters’ turnout.
