The first batch of Finnish peacekeeping mission on Saturday left the country for Central African Republic to participate in the peacekeeping activities under the European Union mission.

The six-member Finnish team equipped with peacekeeping materials left Turku Airport on the evening by a cargo flight for Bangui area.

“The main force will join the mission next week,” said Lieutenant Colonel Kalle Seppälä, a senior defence official on the team.

The EU mission will be there temporarily and in September the responsibility will be taken over by the UN-led operation along with approximately 10,000 African Union soldiers and a couple of thousand police officers.

The EU mission will operate in the capital city area of Bangui and focus on protecting the people and safeguarding the international relief organisations.

The Finnish soldiers are expected to take part in tasks such as clearing mines and explosives, emergency medical operations and civilian and military crisis management.
