Police on Wednesday discovered a package containing the remains of five full-term foetuses from the basement of an apartment house at Heinäpää in Oulu.

The law enforcers arrested a 35-year-old woman in connection with the incident, said the police.

“The discovered dead babies, according to the current impression, were nearly full-term foetuses,” said Inspector Seppo Leinonen of the Oulu police. “We have the impression that the infants had a chance of survival.”

The Finnish-born woman had moved to the apartment block with her family from downtown Oulu just a few months ago.

The property maintenance on Tuesday notified the police to find out the cause of a strong stench emanating from the apartment house located in Heinäpää.

According to Leionen, the suspected woman arrived at the scene and said there were three bodies in the package which she had given birth to at home five to 10 years ago.

The investigation, however, shows that there were five bodies.

The woman said she stored the remains of the bodies after she had given birth to the stillborns at home. She did not, however, provide rationale for her actions.

The age of the infants could not be exactly ascertained at the stage as the bodies were badly decomposed, said the police.

The woman lived a fairly normal life, was working, married and has children. According to Leinonen, the woman does not have any criminal background. There is also no indication that the act is connected to religion in any way.

The revelation came as a shock to the closest to the woman as well as her neighbours.

Many knew the woman who had for a long time lived in the city centre and worked in the restaurant business. “The woman was a little bit peculiar and reserved but very calm and a nice person. She never spoke of her home affairs,” said a neighbour who had known her for a few years.

The woman’s current family, according to Leinonen, is not suspected of taking part in the act.

The police are investigating the incident as manslaughter.
