The government has taken an initiative to entitle different authorities to inform police at their own initiative about threats that may subsequently lead to violence.

The Ministry of Interior undertook the move with the view to prevent cases of domestic violence and child killings, ministry sources said.

This will enable for instance a teacher to inform the police, if the teacher suspects that the child is abused by the parents.

Up till now, the police have to seek information by themselves and the challenge faced by the police is compounded by the fact that they do not have information on other authorities.

"We have applied for that so that we can get clearer rules from the ones we currently have, ones that would encourage self initiated exchange of information and do not require secrecy," said Sanna Heikinheimo, a director of the interior ministry.

According to Heikinheimo, the aim of the reform is to specifically address the prevention of cases of domestic killings and violence.

If passed, the amendment would apply to four different laws.

The objective is to have the parliament debate on the proposed amendments in autumn and enable the changes to be applied from the beginning of next year.
