The Defence Forces on Friday announced the plan to terminate 126 of its staff from the beginning of next year.

The figure is just a portion of the envisaged redundancy need as it constitutes only six percent of the original reduction plan.

In addition 38 of its staff also face the threat of redundancies in 2015.

All of the Defence Forces staff to be dismissed are civilians except four non-commissioned officers.

No new roles were found for two of the non-commissioned officer while the other two refused to move to a different location in the country.

The majority of the terminations according to the Chief of Finnish Defence Forces General Ari Puheloinen involve department secretaries, office secretaries and warehouse personnel.

According to Puheloinen, 90 million euros will be saved annually from the staff reductions.

The total annual defence forces savings is 250 million euros.

"We would have threatened the financial dead end if we would have continued with the same composition." said Puheloinen in a briefing.

The redundancies are part of the reform process to cut off 2,100 tasks from 2012 to 2015 which will result to 670 military roles and 1430 civilians terminated.

About one third of the staff reductions will be through retirements and recruitment reductions.

Also 150 to 200 employees are set to be outsourced to other employer. A number of employees will be handed redundancy payment.

In addition to the redundancies, about 1,500 defence staff will be transferred to new areas and 2,000 roles will also be moved to new locations.

The Defence Forces embarked on saving programmes because its funding decreased at the time when defence material has become more expensive as well as there has been rise in other costs.
