The Ukrainian authorities recently have arrested Russians who claimed to have been journalists working for the Finnish broadcasting network MTV3.

The news was first reported by the Ukrainian Telekritika, which informed that the incident took place ahead of the May 25 presidential election.

The journalists were arrested near the western Ukrainian town of Uzhhorod.

According to Ukraine’s interior ministry, the arrested in fact were Russian television journalists.

They were later deported from Ukraine.

MTV was made aware of the story after it was run by Yle on Saturday. Merja Ylä-Anttila, editor-in -chief at MTV condemned the impersonation.

“It is very unfortunate, if our representatives have been impersonated. I consider this very strange and unusual,” said Anttila in a telephone interview to Yle.

According to Anttila, MTV had not received any official information on the matter. The probe into the matter will be continued between the Russian television network and the Ukrainian authorities.

Finland’s Ambassador to Ukraine Arja Makkonen sent a message to the news agency STT and confirmed that the embassy is aware of the issue.

According to Makkonen, the embassy had written to Ukraine’s security service and asked for more information on the situation. So far there had been no response.

Ukraine’s interior ministry on Friday updated the information on the arrests on its website. According to the statement, the Russians impersonating MTV journalists were arrested on May 17 in Uzhhorod.

The arrested are reported to have been journalists working for Russia’s Channel One (Perviy Kanal) and were on an intelligence mission. The journalists were sent back to Russia, according to the statement.
