President Sauli Niinistö on Tuesday called on Russia to take more actions to calm the conflict in Ukraine.
    
He made the remarks when meeting with visiting Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov at Kultaranta, an official summer residence of the president.
    
Lavrov said that Russia had taken all possible steps to alleviate the crisis in Ukraine. However, Niinistö appealed that Russia take further measures to ease the situation, according to a statement issued by the presidential office.
    
Lavrov said that Russia respects the electoral result of Ukraine and expects a proposal from the newly elected Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on a ceasefire and measures in line with the aim.
    
On relationship between the European Union and Russia, Niinistö said that as a member state of the EU, Finland has made efforts for a long time to make the relationship more functional.
    
"This would benefit both Russia and the EU and especially Finland. We will continue in this direction," added Niinistö.
    
At the invitation of the Finnish foreign minister Erkki Tuomioja, the Lavrov took an official visit to Finland from June 9 to 10.
    
After his visit to Finland, Lavrov is leaving for St Petersburg, where he will meet German and Polish representatives.
