Delegates of the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party), the biggest component of the five-party ruling alliance will elect a new party chief who is supposed to be the prime minister of the country in the party council that begins on Friday.

The council is being held in Lahti and will continue till Sunday, party sources said.

The outgoing chairman, Jyrki Katainen, as expected, will take the stage on Friday evening to give his farewell speech.

Three candidates will go head to head to succeed Katainen.

They are: Paula Risikko, the minister of Social Affairs and Health, Minister of European Affairs and Foreign Trade Alexander Stubb and Jan Vapaavuori, the minister of Economic Affairs.

The candidates hold different views on different issues, such as inheritance tax, trade union membership fee, tax deduction and same-sex couple’s right to adoption.

Risikko is the only candidate who would not scrap inheritance tax and also does not approve same-sex right of adoption. Stubb, on his part, would eliminate trade tax deduction on trade union membership fees.

The convention which will come to a close on Sunday will be attended by a record number of delegates and will be covered by a constellation of media houses.

Jyrki Katainen, who led the party for the last one decade announced on April 5 his decision to step down as the National Coalition Party chairman as well as the prime minister.
