Päivi Räsänen, the chair of the Suomen Kristillisdemokraatit (Christian Democrats of Finland) told news agency STT that she is looking forward to lead the party in the next parliamentary elections.

“A year ago, I was elected the chair by the party congress almost unanimously. I am motivated to continue,” said Räsänen, also the interior minister.

The party today agreed to hold an extraordinary party congress meeting which would deal with a change of rules to facilitate organisation of the annual party congress in early 2015. Under the current format, the party’s annual convention can be held in May at the earliest.

This would allow the Christian Democrats to change the party leader before the elections during the annual party congress.

According to the Finnish-language newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, a former member of the European Parliament, Sari Essayah is interested to rise to the party leadership.

Commenting to STT, Essayah said an early party convention sounds reasonable. The former MEP however did not say whether she would contest for the party’s senior-most position.

Essayah reminded that she was asked to contest for the party’s leadership position prior to the party’s annual convention last June, but the EU elections were, in her opinion, of more importance.

Räsänen has led the party since 2004.
