The majority of mayors approve the legislation allowing forced mergers of crisis-hit municipalities, reports a survey commissioned by MTV.

All the municipality mayors were asked about the issue through an online panel in which half of them responded.

Two out of three mayors who responded to the survey consider the law on forced merger necessary.

The majority of respondents also believe the decision of the government to cancel forced merger in urban areas is a good one.

The survey was conducted in June 17-26.

Earlier this month, the government forced the merger of Tarvasjoki to Lieto, Lavia and Pori as well as Jalasjärvi and Kurikka were merged.
