A man died in a glider accident at Piikajärvi in Kokemäki area of Satakunta on Friday afternoon.

The accident took place at a small airstrip in Piikajärvi when the glider being towed by a motorised plane crashed on the runway. The airfield is popular with aviation enthusiasts.

The young driver of the glider who was injured in the accident succumbed to his wounds immediately, the South Finland police said.

The dead hailed from Turku.

According to the police, the glider fell from a height of about 10 metres.

According to eyewitnesses, the glider ascended steeply in the midst of towing.

The pilot corrected the angle downwards but the glider hit the airfield and ascended once again but finally dropped to the field at about a 45-degree angle.

The motorised plane landed safely at the airstrip.

Earlier, on June 28, a hang glider was killed in a crash at Jämijärvi in Satakunta.

The police said the accident took place when the glider suffered a 50-metre crash immediately after taking off from Jämi airport.

On April 20, eight of the 10 parachuters on board a small passenger plane were killed in a crash in the same area at Jämijärvi in Satakunta region.

The crash was probably caused by an up and down movement of the aircraft as a result of control problems.
