Kari Mäkinen, the archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland on Monday apologised to the homosexual community at the public debate forum SuomiAreena in Pori.

The archbishop apologised for the cruel treatment meted out to sexual minorities by the society and the church.

“When I think of outside pushing and treatment of sexual minorities that we the church and the society have been guilty of and how still it is continuing, I have to say this is the place to give an apology – without explanation and straight forth,” said the archbishop.

The archbishop in his speech pointed out that cruelty directed towards sexual minorities has not disappeared but has turned subtler than in the past, as seen in failure to respond, fence-sitting and repudiation.
