Prime Minister Alexander Stubb on Tuesday held nearly an hour-long conversation over phone with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev on the situation in Ukraine and the role of European Union, said on official press release.

In the call initiated by the Finnish premier, they had an open discussion on the bilateral relations between Finland and Russia, the Ukraine situation and the European Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

“The situation in Ukraine has posed new challenges for cooperation between Finland and Russia. As an EU member state, our position on the Ukraine crisis is very clear,” said Stubb, adding, “At the same time, we consider it very important to conduct a high-level dialogue with Russia now and in the future.”

Stubb said he hopes Russia will use its influence on the separatists in eastern Ukraine and thereby contribute to a speedy resolution of the crisis.

The Finnish prime minister told Medvedev that, in its meeting on July 16, the European Council will discuss a number of key EU appointments and the situation in the Middle East, but also the crisis in Ukraine and possible further restrictive measures by the EU, the press release added.
