More than half of Finns use mobile phones while driving, according to a survey by the road safety body Liikenneturva.

The drivers either talk over mobile phone or send text messages while driving.

Nine out of 10 respondents attested that they do answer phone calls time to time while driving.

More than half of them said they also read text messages while driving.

According to Liikenneturva, smart phones and social media in everyday life are reflected in peoples’ driving.

In this case, the risks posed by use of mobile phone while driving are either not known or simply ignored.

Lack of attention quadruples the risks of being involved in an accident.

Reading of text messages especially increases the risks, since both eyes and thoughts are away from driving.

The online survey by TNS Gallup interviewed 1,677 people. The respondents, however, do not represent the distribution of the entire population as it was conducted online.
