Hobbies which are different from your daily job help to cope better at work, according to experts in working life.

If a person’s job entails writing and reading, one should move around and meet people during their free time.

One should also learn to take a break from work in between, reminds Heikki Huilaja, a researcher from the University of Lapland.

“It is a good thing, if your hobby is something else (from your job),” says Huilaja, adding that this benefits one in the sense that it refreshes for a while from work-related issues and helps to get hold of the job once again.

The importance of physical exercise as a hobby has been emphasised in the last 20 years, according to working life researchers.

Due to faster working rate, it is important that one manages to continue to work. In the end, it does not matter to the employer what the employees enjoy to do in their free time.

Maija Eklöf, the managing director at HENRY human resource department, points out that it is important to have interests in life.

“If a very career-oriented person comes in during recruitment, I look carefully what else the person does. If there is nothing else important in life, the alarm bells start to ring,” remarks Eklöf, adding that it is meaningful that life is in balance.
