Finland's population at the end of June was 5,460,459, according to Statistics Finland's preliminary data.
 
Over the January to June period, Finland's population increased by 9,190 persons, which is 1,620 less than in the respective period of one year previously.
 
The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad.
 
The number of immigrants was 6,720 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 2,470 persons, the data say.
 
According to the preliminary statistics for January to June period, 12,970 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 6,250 persons emigrated from Finland.
 
During the period, 28,490 children were born, which is 500 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013.
 
The number of deaths decreased by 550 from the year before and stood at 26,010.
 
The population grew in the regions of Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, North Ostrobothnia, Varsinais-Suomi, Central Ostrobothnia, Åland, Kanta-Häme, Southern Ostrobothnia and Päijät-Häme, according to the data by region.
 
The population grew most in absolute numbers in Uusimaa, where it went up by 10,230 persons. The next largest increase in population was seen in Pirkanmaa, 800 persons.
 
Relative to the population, population increase was highest in Åland, 7.1 per mil, and in Uusimaa, 6.4 per mil.
 
Population loss was highest in absolute numbers in the region of Lapland that lost 740 persons of its population, the statistics say.
