President Sauli Niinistö and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday held a telephone conversation and discussed the ongoing Ukraine crisis including the investigation into the July 17 downing of a Malaysian passenger aircraft in Eastern Ukraine.

Niinistö made the call, during which the presidents of the two neighbouring countries focused on a possible ceasefire in Ukraine, said an official press release.

The Finland president urged Putin to play a cooperative role in ensuring an amicable solution of the crisis, pointing out that it intensified further following the downing of the passenger plane.

Niinistö wished that the investigation into the incident shooting be international and neutral.

Putin assured the Finnish president that Russia also supports a neutral investigation to make the real situation clear to people across the world.

He also emphasised the importance of an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, said the press release.

Earlier, on May 19, Niinistö had another telephone conversation with Putin where they discussed various issues including the Ukraine crisis and bilateral relations.
