The number of applications for Finnish citizenship saw a considerable rise over the first six months of 2014, said the Finnish Immigration Service.
 
A total of 6,103 people applied for Finnish citizenship in January-June.
 
The number of applications was 40 per cent higher compared to the number in the first six months of the previous year, according to a statement released by the Finnish Immigration Service.
 
A total of 4,340 people had applied for Finnish citizenship in the first half of 2013.
 
In January-June 2014, the highest number of citizenship applications was submitted by Russians (1,227) followed by Somalis (1,162) and Iraqis (603).
 
A total of 3,931 applicants were granted Finnish citizenship in the period while in the first half of 2013 the number of applicants receiving citizenship was slightly higher (4,202).
 
The average processing time of citizen application in the first half of 2014 became shorter, 217 days compared to 351 days in the corresponding period of 2013.
