FTimes-STT Report, July 28

Russian authorities on Sunday stopped traffic at the Niirala border crossing point in the country's eastern border due to bomb scare.

Traffic was stopped at both sides of the border crossing point in Tohmajärvi, northern Karelia for about half an hour in the afternoon because of a suspicious suitcase.

"According to our information, a passenger had left a suitcase in a wrong place which aroused suspicion of a bomb," said captain Markku Räty from the North Karelia Border Guard.

According to Räty, the owner of the suitcase was, however, quickly found.

Such cases of bomb suspicions leading to traffic disruption along the eastern border is very rare, said the captain.

The situation, however, did not lead to any serious traffic congestion as the queue was only about a few hundred metres, said Räty.
