Tuomioja called on the international community to prepare for imposing sanctions against involved through the UN Security Council.
"In this situation, we should be ready to target both Israel and the Palestinians with certain sanctions, blockades and embargoes, " said Tuomioja, "But if Israel commits the kinds of excesses that we have witnessed, or has not been prepared to move forward in the peace process, there should also be consequences for this."
Israeli military operations on the Gaza Strip have lasted for three weeks, causing over 1,000 deaths and thousands of injuries. The UN Security Council has called for an immediate ceasefire on humanitarian grounds, but no effective measure has been taken on the ground.
