Transport Minister Paula Risikko on Tuesday said the transport and communications ministry’s preparedness for a possible closure of the Russian airspace a normal practice.
The minister however said the country has not received any official confirmation of the closure of Russian airspace.
Russia last week said it was considering an over-flight ban on western countries’ airlines to the Asia-Pacific region.
Finnish language news outlets Ilkka and Pohjolainen reported on Tuesday that the transport and communications ministry is looking into different options in case the Russian airspace is closed.
Talking to the news agency STT, Risikko however did not disclose any details about the measures the ministry is exploring.
Finavia, which operates the Helsinki-Vantaa airport, said about 10 to 20 flights from the country pass through the Russian airspace a day. In addition, up to 20,000 flights pass through the Finnish airspace en route to Russia.
