The Finnish Construction Trade Union has announced that it will organise a countrywide 2-hour protest strike on August 22.
The union wants to send a message to the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) and other employers that it will not accept any raise in the minimum retirement age of 63 years.
The union reached the decision on Wednesday and the protest will start at 2:00 pm.
The chair of the union, Matti Harjuniemi, does not believe that an increase in the retirement age necessarily extends one’s career.
Harjuniemi pointed out that there are a lot of unemployed people in the sector. He also stressed that it is not prudent to increase the retirement age considering the laborious nature of construction work.
Harjuniemi suggested that, instead, the current flexible age of retirement should be maintained.
