A landlord who refused to rent an apartment to a foreigner has agreed to compensate the woman during negotiations with the Ombudsman for Minorities.

The ombudsman negotiated on behalf of the woman from United States in the case in which the landlord had denied her the right to rent an apartment because she was not a Finnish citizen.

The woman searching for a place to reside has lived in the country for a long time.

The ombudsman held that the landlord was guilty of discriminating on grounds of nationality.

The settlement was concluded with the agreement that the landlord would compensate the woman 600 euro, equivalent to a month’s rent.

According to Ombudsman for Minorities Eva Biaudet, the case is a reminder that discrimination prohibition also concerns the private housing market.
